Little Wins Compound
Crafting contains a paradox. To create our best work, we are patient and avoid rushing the process, while at the same time we work quickly without delay.
- Rick Rubin, The Creative Act: A Way of Being
I have a problem.
The problem is that I'm a "dabbler." I like the beginning seed of an idea. I love thinking about the potential of some new, crazy idea. It's why I have a hard drive full of game prototypes and only a few folders of finished games.
But, what if we reframe this "problem"?
Let's try this, "Having this many ideas means I get this many shots on goal. All I need is a few of them to score and that's a lot of wins."
Sometimes, we're mid project and we get "distracted" by something new, novel, shiny, exciting.
Yes, pushing punctuation around Adobe InDesign can be tedious! How could I ignore the whiteboard? It's calling me. It's right there!
But, the truth is: I'm in production mode. We're building the next big product here. Anything I can do to keep the process moving is a win, no matter how small.
The paradox is that admitting that taking small breaks to plant new seeds is part of the production process. We find these diversions healthy and rejuvenating as long as they don't derail the focus of the main project.
Taking the project closer to completion, even if the route is not a straight line, is always the right move.
How are you meandering to your next big success?
I'm rooting for you.
